Suunto is a Finnish company renowned mainly for their beautifully crafted sports watches. One such fine example is the Suunto Elementum Aqua watch which is aimed towards the diving enthusiasts. Its price range is quite high but the spectacular quality easily justifies it.
One thing that can immediately catch your attention is the design. Aqua is part of “Elementum” which is Suunto’s luxury line of watches, and even though its functionality is dedicated to divers, the look seems to fit nicely in more formal settings. The materials used are of very high quality, the stainless steel case appears to have a satin-like finish. Diving information is shown on a crisp sapphire crystal display which boasts an anti-reflective coating for easy reading even in powerful sunlight. A distinguishing feature of the Elementum Aqua is the prominent crown pusher adds a unique touch to the design. The mechanism is very intuitive, you can change the settings very easily and comfortably. Speaking of comfort, the metallic bracelet feels good on the wrist, the strap is sturdy enough and overall the watch is a pleasure to wear.
When submerged deeper than a meter this is where the magic happens as the Suunto Elementum Aqua automatically enters into dive mode. At a glance, you can check the current depth, the maximum depth , the dive time and the temperature of the water. Pretty impressive especially given the fact that the watch creates a dive log with the information after exiting the water. It may not be able to replace a dive computer but it does a fine job for an amateur diver. A great aspect of the functionality of this watch is the user-friendliness, there is no need to study complex instructions as it takes very little time to get used to the way the watch operates. Somewhat not surprising, The Elementum Aqua is not exactly well suited to dry land. It lacks several key features for a digital watch. Most importantly, it doesn’t have a stopwatch function and a display for the seconds is missing as well. The lithium battery is also a bit disappointing as it only lasts a year and is not user removable.
The Suunto Elementum Aqua is a very elegantly crafted device, which comes with a hybrid design – suited for recreational diving but also for semi-formal wear. A perfect choice for anyone who likes a dedicated, simple to use and reliable watch with a luxurious feel.
