The Suunto Core Alu Deep Black is a practical and at the same time elegant timepiece. Made by the Finnish company Suunto, it has that typical modern feel expected from the brand. It’s packed with tremendous functionality in a stylish all-black rubber aluminium combo.
Before I go over the functions of this watch, let’s take a look at the design and the build quality. Part of the Core Series from Suunto, the Alu Deep Black is a device made for outdoors. The construction is pretty robust though the materials used are light. The aluminum finish looks nice and the rubber band is flexible and seems quite durable. On the wrist, the watch fits quite well and it offers great comfort. One particular downside of aluminum is the weak resistance to scratches but with a bit of extra care, the watch can be maintained well enough. The display of this model is digital and despite its relatively bad contrast, it’s very practical and easy to use. A small issue would be reading it in low light, as it proves a bit challenging at certain angles.
Looking over the functions of this Suunto we can find lots of good stuff. It features a digital compass for monitoring direction, an altimeter for measuring changes in altitude, a barometer which is especially handy for water sports as it measures sea-level pressure and records a 24-hour history. A thermometer is also present and combined with the barometric info it enables predictions to determine upcoming weather conditions. A nice little function is the Storm Alarm which can detect sudden drops in pressure to warn the user of potential bad changes of the weather. This can be very practical for hikers or for other outdoor enthusiasts. But even divers can appreciate this watch as it can give accurate depth readings up to 10 meters / 33 feet, and it has underwater buttons. Among all these functions there are also a couple of smart tricks like automatically switching between the altimeter and barometer for more precise data regarding changes in pressure and the ability to set the compass to a certain bearing using just a one-touch function.
Suunto has certainly hit all the marks with this beautiful and practical device suited for harsh environments but great for everyday use too. Despite a couple of shortcomings, The Core Al Deep Black from Suunto is overall a reliable companion, meant to satisfy any craving for adventure.
